Night public transport in Riga will resume service on 17 May

From 17 May to 28 September, night public transport will be available on weekends and public holidays in Riga – three bus routes will run from the centre of Riga to some of the largest neighbourhoods of Riga.

Night buses will be available from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday, as well as on public holidays. The first buses will start running on 17 May. Buses will depart from Riga city centre (Stacijas laukums) to the neighbourhoods five times – at 00.00, 1.00, 2.00, 3.00, 4.00.

To assess passenger demand for night public transport, three special bus routes have been developed for the pilot project. They are designed to cover as many densely populated neighbourhoods as possible and to return the bus to its first departure point within an hour.

Riga residents and visitors are invited to use the night buses to attend cultural and entertainment events, to explore the city in the late evenings and at night, and to get to and from work or home.

The stops will be available on Rīgas satiksme website rigassatiksme.lv and the app. Prices and procedures will remain the same as for the daily routes.

Passengers should note that buses will serve all stops on their way and will stop only at stops where passengers are present or where passengers in the cabin have indicated their wish to disembark. In the centre, where the bus stops are densely located, there will be designated stops at which the bus routes will stop.

The decision to reinstate night public transport was taken on 6 May by the Riga City Council and the Commission for Licensing Commercial Transportation of Passengers. The proposal for the provision of a night public transport service in the warm season of 2025 – from May to September, when locals and tourists spend their evenings outdoors and various concerts and events take place in the city – was developed by a specially established working group of the Riga City Council on evening and night time management planning. To implement the pilot project, additional funding of up to EUR 100 000 will be allocated to Riga Municipality Limited Liability Company (SIA) Rīgas satiksme.
